1. What to do in Cartagena if it rains? A visit to the local market
In the old days Spaniards will get all their groceries from the central market and, in most Spanish cities, you can still find one.
Mercado de Santa Florentina, in Cartagena, is a lively indoor market where you can find vegetables, fruits, meats… but also coffee, pastries and a tapas bar.
It normally opens until 3pm and it is closed on Sunday.
2. Roman Theater Museum
Cartagena is famous from its history, specially during the Roman Empire. You will find there one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. The ruins are inside a Museum complex, a must visit if you are in town and a great plan for a rainy day.
Tickets costs just 6€ and keep in mind they close Mondays.
3. Long lunch Spanish style to try Caldero, the best thing to do in Cartagena on a rainy day
The area is famous for its caldero rice, a risotto-like dish made with fish broth and normally served with a garlic-base sauce.

4. MURAM the modern art museum
Check out the exhibits at the modern art museum. It is located in a reconverted palace that also was once a monastery.
You will get to see the permanent pieces along with the pop up exhibits. The entrance is free and they close Mondays.

If you had planned to buy souvenirs or do some shopping treat yourself to an indulgent shopping day. Keep in mind most shops in Spain close Sundays and small ones might also close from 3 to 5pm during weekdays.
