The Region of Valencia is home to some of the most stunning beaches on the mediterranean coast of Spain. One of the most special places you can find in the area is Granadella beach or Cala Granadella, in Javea.
Hidden among pines and greenery, you will never guess the forest you are passing through will end right by the beach…
Granadella beach or Cala Granadella, Javea. A place made of Summer dreams
The first thing that will catch your eye is the crystalline turquoise water of the cala. You will be amazed by the explosion of colour, the Mediterranean at its fullest.
The main area of the beach is around 160 metres. However, if you verge to the right, by the shore you will find some smaller beaches in which you will feel like you have your own private piece of paradise.
Please note, it is a pebble beach. You can lie down comfortably on a towel in most areas, however special shoes like the ones below are recommended if you want to get into the sea.
Water sports in Cala Granadella, Javea
Water sports are very popular in Cala Granadella as there are coves and other areas only accessible by the sea. Some of the activities you can do include :
Hiking from Granadella beach
You will enjoy some spectacular views by taking the hiking route to Castell de la Granadella from the beach’s parking area. It is a 3 km hike up the hill that takes around 45 minutes.
Unfortunately, we can not tell you much about the hike as when we visited the area we took a more passive approach. Instead of going for a hike we just had some beers on the beach. Sure the hike is lovely but nothing beats a cold drink by the beach in a Summer day!
Anyhow, you can find all the official information about the hike here >>
How to get to Cala Granadella beach, Javea.
The best way to get to Cala Granadella is by driving. It is spectacular a spectacular drive through a pine forest!.
If, in the other hand, you are staying in Javea and do not want to drive, there are boat tours to the Cala from the port. ( You can check this one in a catamaran that also includes a paella lunch! >>)
When to visit Grandella beach
Keep in mind that, while the beach is not very popular for tourists, it is very well known for locals. As it is not very big it gets very crowded in summer, especially at the weekends.
The parking area is a short minute walk from the beach. When it gets full you are forced to park up hill. The walk to the beach and back can be quite a lot, especially in the summer heat.
If you want to avoid crowds, we recommend you avoid visiting during the weekends of July and August, as the parking area might get full as early as 9am.
The good news is, if you go for an early start, you have a lovely bar just by the beach to enjoy a coffee and an epic breakfast.
Services in Cala Granadella
You will also find a couple of restaurants, in case you want to go for the idyllic Spanish day and enjoy a paella by the sea.
Where to stay near Granadella beach
We choose to stay in the nearby village of Benitachell (10 – 15 minute drive to Cala Granadella). It is a good location if you want to avoid the most touristic places and get a taste of the local life. We stayed in this recently renovated 2 bedroom apartment with all the amenities you will need and a balcony with some lovely views .
If you stay in this apartment we recommend you also visit the nearby Cala del Moraig.
Overall, Cala Granadella is a very special spot to get a taste of the Spanish summer, enjoy a drink with some spectacular views and dip in the sea to for all the troubles from your everyday life be washed away.
