There’s a very good reason why the island holds the Windsurf World Cup but is Fuerteventura windy? Here is everything you need to know about the wind in Fuerteventura and the best tricks to avoid it.
Is Fuerteventura windy? Yes, but we know the best tricks to avoid the wind
Is Fuerteventura windy? How windy is Fuerteventura?
Some people believe the name of the island of Fuerteventura comes from the words “strong wind” in Spanish (viento fuerte). While we were not there when they invented the name, and therefore cannot give testimony of this internet theory being true, we can guarantee the island can get really airy.
Why is it so windy in Fuerteventura?
The island is located in the middle of the ocean and it seems it can get quite wild in the middle of nowhere.
Also, there are no mountains or trees in the island, just some volcanoes. The highest mountain is just 807m. This means there is nothing to stop the wind.
When is Fuerteventura more windy?
It tends to be stronger in July and August – that’s when the Windsurf World Cup takes place – and it is believed to be milder in September and October.

Which part of Fuerteventura is less windy?
It changes so the answer to this question does too. Generally speaking, if it is windy in the island, you will be better off on urban beaches as the buildings will stop it to a point.
This includes the urban beaches of Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo and the promenade in Morrojable. You can have a look at our favourite beach in Corralejo in this post.
The locals’ trick to avoid the wind in Fuerteventura: a shelter made with rocks
If you find yourself at the beach and it is already windy, you might find some sort of shelters made with rocks. They are called corralitos, you can hop into one and sun bathe inside and they should stop most of the wind.
Your best friend to avoid the wind
As you never know where the wind is coming from the best option is to track it live before choosing where to go.
We used the app Windy as we were able to move around the coast of the island and decide where to go depending on where it was less windy.
We aimed for beaches where the wind was below 13 kmh or 8 mph.
