Driving around Lanzarote
Before deciding where to stay keep it mind that it might take longer than you think to drive around. It takes a bit over an hour to drive from the north to the south of the island. so keep it in consideration when planning your trip.

Best touristic areas to stay in Lanzarote
Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are the most popular areas to stay in Lanzarote. However, we will not recommend them to stay in if you want to experience the island like a local.
The three of them cater for tourists and, while you will find many apartments and resorts available at very reasonable price, you will also mostly encounter Irish pubs and the kind of restaurants you find in England or Germany.

Costa Teguise has beautiful beaches and a lovely square but it is very touristic. You won’t encounter many locals but you will find all the amenities and very attractive apartment prices.

We stayed in Costa Teguise in a lovely fully equipped new apartment with an epic swimming pool. Have a look here>
Playa Blanca is more quiet than Costa Teguise as the resorts are a bit more upscale and they cater for an older clientele.
Puerto del Carmen is somewhere in the middle with a bit of younger vibe.
Best areas to stay in Lanzarote for couples or a quiet time
If you want to scape the touristic crowds it will be best to head to the villages inland, as long as you are renting a car, so you can explore around.
Our favorite places to stay in Lanzarote are Teguise and Yaiza. Both inland you will get a better feel of the local life.
Last time we went we stayed in Yaiza in a lovely boutique hotel. The place was a stunning example of the local architecture. We paid 85€ per night for a double room with breakfast included. Have a look here>

Filled with white washed houses with green, blue o brown accents (That are the only three colors allowed in the island for the doors and windows) and surrounded by volcanos they are perfect for a quiet time after the beach.

While they are small villages you will still find restaurants around. Teguise is bigger and with more options but in Yaiza you will find one of the best restaurants in the Island, La Bodega de Santiago.
Best areas to stay in Lanzarote: Cute local villages near the ocean
If you would rather stay near the ocean but want that local feel we will recommend Famara or Mala.
Famara has a younger vibe as it is right by one of the best spots for surfing. It tends to be very windy so might not be the best idea if you are planning to stay in the nearby beach.
Mala is perfect if you want to relax as it is very quiet. You will not find many facilities in the area. Nearby you will find natural pools but be aware the area called Charco del Palo is nudist.
